What does the course cover?
“Education for Episcopal Health Ministry and Parish Nursing” is an intensive 5-day course that emphasizes Episcopal traditions in the theology of health and healing, liturgy, polity and prayer. Practical aspects of developing Health Ministry in a local congregation are addressed. Who are we as Episcopal Health Ministers? Why offer Health Ministry in the local congregation? What do Health Ministers/Parish Nurses do? How can we do it?

Who should take it?
The course is designed for the following:

  • Anyone, clergy or lay, who wants to learn more about the function of health ministry in a faith congregation
  • Clergy or lay persons who want to enrich an existing Health Ministry in an Episcopal congregation with more grounding in the Anglican tradition
  • Health professionals who are beginning a Health Ministry in an Episcopal or other congregation
  • Registered nurses who want to attend a course with the IPNRC approved curriculum and nursing CEUs to become Faith Community Nurses and to minister in an Episcopal or other congregation

    ***Registration is limited to the first 20 participants. Health professionals other than nurses are welcome to enroll, as well as other non-professionals interested in learning more about general health ministry as a lay vocation

Who will teach the course?
Presenter: Carol Sullivan, MEd, RN
Carol Sullivan graduated from the Johns Hopkins Hospital School of Nursing, Washington College, and Salisbury State University, all in Maryland. Her work experience includes pediatrics, public health, nursing school faculty, and travel nursing. She also has experience as a Clinical Nurse Specialist in Women’s and Children’s Health. She holds a certificate in parish nursing from Marquette University and had an active parish nurse ministry in her home parish of Old Wye Church and St. Luke’s Chapel from 1997 until 2005. From 2002 until late 2007, she has been the parish nurse at St. Anne's Episcopal Parish in Annapolis, MD. Now retired from active parish nursing, Carol is also the regional representative from Province III to NEHM, the Diocesan Liaison to NEHM from the Diocese of Easton, and the Health Ministry Network Coordinator for Province III.  She has completed the IPNRC Faculty Training Program.

Co-Presenter:  Sara T. Fry, PhD, RN, FCN
Sara Fry graduated from The Johns Hopkins Hospital School of Nursing and holds a BSN from the University of South Carolina at Columbia, SC; a Masters of Science in public health nursing from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, NC; and MA and PhD degrees in philosophy from Georgetown University, Washington, DC.  Her clinical work experience includes acute care and public health nursing.  She taught nursing and biomedical ethics in university settings for over 20 years.  She holds a certificate in Parish Nursing from the Dallas-Fort Worth Faith & Health Collaborative and is additional faculty with Saint Anne's Hospital Congregational Health Ministry and Parish Nurse Program, Fall River, MA.  Sara is also the Coordinator of Health and Parish Nurse Ministries in her home parish, The Church of the Holy Spirit, Orleans, MA, in the Diocese of Massachusetts, Province I.  She has completed the IPNRC Faculty Training Program.

Tuition is $400.

Room and Board for this course is $400 (double occupancy). Single rooms are an additional $100.
